I am writing to urge you to pass the bipartisan Pregnant Workers Fairness Act S.1486. Despite existing protections, pregnant workers in the U.S. still face workplace discrimination—across race and ethnicity, industry, and state. It is well past time that pregnant women are guaranteed reasonable accommodations which allow them to stay on the job in order to maintain financial security and have a healthy pregnancy. This is particularly true given the ongoing Black maternal health crisis, as well as the additional health risks and economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thirty states, D.C., and five cities have passed laws requiring some employers to provide reasonable accommodations to pregnant workers, but these protections shouldn’t depend on where you live or work. That’s why we need the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act which has bipartisan support, as well as backing from the U.S Chamber of Commerce, the Society for Human Resource Management, and diverse faith and disability communities. The House passed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act in May 2021 so now it’s YOUR turn! Please protect the health and economic security of pregnant workers by encouraging Senate leadership to bring the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act to the floor as soon as possible and vote YES on S.1486!
