As your constituent, I urge you to take bold and decisive action in response to this public health and economic crisis to address the ongoing needs of working families. Working women are especially vulnerable in this moment, with record numbers being forced out of the workforce, primarily shouldering the burden of caregiving while juggling work, or in a position where their work puts them at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic without adequate protections. In fact, one in three jobs held by women has been designated as essential and women of color are more likely to be doing essential jobs than anyone else. While the December COVID-19 Emergency Relief package was a good start, we need more than short-term solutions as some of those provisions end January 31st! I am calling on you to prioritize and protect the immediate health and financial wellbeing of workers and their families by taking the following steps: • Reinstate, extend, expand emergency paid sick days and paid leave, closing critical gaps that leave many workers out • Extend unemployment insurance benefits for the duration of the economic crisis • Save child care for millions of famillies by providing emergency funding to stabilize the system • Extend critical student loan relief measures • Increase housing and food assistance so that families who have lost work and income can be safe, sheltered, and fed • Fund state and local governments to protect communities from further negative impacts • Provide additional stimulus checks to families to help them meet basic needs I urge you to ensure that the needs of all workers, women, families, and vulnerable people are considered as you provide leadership through this ongoing pandemic. Please pass immediate COVID-19 relief legislation that includes emergency funding for unemployed workers, frontline workers, child care, health care, housing, food, and state and local governments. We cannot have a stable and sustainable recovery without it.
